Event: Late-night host Jimmy Kimmel told a joke that made light of how the President's supporters were reacting to the recent murder of conservative activist, Charlie Kirk. Note that he did not make light of Mr. Kirk's murder, but of the reaction to it.
2. The Government's Threat (Immediately After)
The Official: FCC Chairman Brendan Carr publicly criticized Kimmel’s comments, calling them "sick" and a possible case of "news distortion."
The Coercion: Carr warned that the FCC—the government agency that controls TV stations' operating licenses—could take action against ABC affiliates if they continued to air the show. He said, "We can do this the easy way or the hard way." This was seen as a threat to the TV stations' business if they didn't comply.
3. The Suspension and the Ratings War
The Administration’s Claim: President Donald Trump and his press secretary, Karoline Leavitt, publicly cheered the backlash, claiming Kimmel had "ZERO talent" and "worse ratings" than his competitors, suggesting the suspension was just a good business decision by the network.
The Reality: However, immediately after the show was suspended, data showed that Kimmel was actually considerably more popular than the President.
