Maine on the Defense! - Rule of Law
In early February 2025, the simmering national debate over transgender athletes ignited a direct confrontation between the White House and Maine's Governor, Janet Mills. The issue began when an executive order was signed directing federal agencies to ensure that federally funded sports programs exclusively admit athletes based on their sex assigned at birth.
The conflict escalated sharply during a bipartisan governors' meeting at the White House. In a pointed exchange, the president questioned Governor Mills on whether she would comply with the order. Mills firmly stated she would follow existing state and federal laws, which protect transgender students under the Maine Human Rights Act.
This defiance was met with a direct threat to withhold federal funding from the state, with the president warning Mills, "You better comply." Governor Mills, in a widely reported moment, retorted, "See you in court."
Following the public clash, the U.S. Department of Education launched an investigation into Maine's policies. In response, Mills and Maine's Attorney General have remained steadfast, vowing to challenge what they describe as federal overreach and an attempt to intimidate the state into abandoning its own laws. The situation has now moved towards a legal battle over states' rights and the interpretation of federal law.
We support an individual’s right to be anyone they wish to be, but we do not believe they have the right to infringe on others in that pursuit. A 6’4” 250lb biological male competing against a 5’4” 125lb biological female is absurdly unfair.
But then there's that pesky issue of the law. Our personal belief, much like the President's, doesn't matter a tinker's damn. Maine state law says it's okay. The executive order only applies to the federal government, not to the states. Game, set, and match to Governor Mills. If you don't like it—and we don't—then get the law in Maine changed. End of story.
